For the Christian community, forgiveness is crucial and plays a central role in their lives. The death of Christ is the perfect example that reflects the significance of forgiveness in Christianity. Jesus Christ was sent on the Earth and crucified for the forgiveness of our sins.
However, there’s one guide that can bring us closer to God’s grace and guarantee us forgiveness–the Sacrament of penance. Amongst the seven sacraments, the Sacrament of penance is the least used one. This can be due to Christians thinking God’s forgiveness is guaranteed irrespective of confessions.
However, this is a lengthy discussion. Let’s dive deeper and understand if God forgives our sins with or without confession.
Forgiveness Is God’s Plan

Romans 5:8 reads, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God sent His only begotten son to save us our eternal life. This signifies that forgiveness has always been a part of God’s plan. His actions, His sacrifices have paved our path to forgiveness.
God has always accepted us, sinners, with open arms. In Luke 15:3-7, while Jesus was narrating the parable of the lost sheep, the scripture reads,” So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”
In this Bible verse, the lost sheep is the sinner who strayed from God’s path. Moreover, Jesus says that God will leave ninety-nine good sheep to go after that one lost sheep. This verse is evidence that God loves us sinners unconditionally with “agape love.”
Furthermore, considering the plan of God, it’s clear to say that He accepts His sinning children with open arms, with or without a confession.
Jesus’ Death Forgave All Our Sins
Confession is critical since it’s one of the holy sacraments. However, that doesn’t imply that God’s forgiveness is conditional; His forgiveness is present irrespective of a confession. A confession is a means to obtain eventual forgiveness.
Jesus’ crucifixion diminished our sins and opened the gates of heaven for us. In John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
This verse perfectly highlights and outlines the fact that our sins have been forgiven forever with Jesus’ death, and we’re granted eternal life. The Lord says those who believe in the Lord will have eternal life.
The Significance of Repentance
According to the Catholic Church, there are certain conditions in which forgiveness is granted without a confession. For instance, if someone is on the death bed and unavailable to go for a confession, God is waiting to offer his forgiveness to us. All he wants us to do is repent, to be apologetic for our sins. That doesn’t necessarily involve a confession; you can ask God for forgiveness, and He shall forgive.
The Lord can see right through us; he hears when our lips can’t explain. Therefore, it’s evident that God will grant us forgiveness.
