Kid these days are up-to-date on the latest trends, celebrity gossip, and Marvel and Disney characters. Unfortunately, when it comes to Christianity, most children need guidance.
If you’re a Christian parent, it’s your responsibility to introduce your child to Jesus.
Here are some tips that can help you.
Love your child
The Gospel teaches that God loves you. Before a child can receive God’s love, it’s essential that they feel valued by their parents. That’s why you need to build a relationship with your child first.
If you don’t, they won’t be interested in what you teach them. Here are some ways to invest in your relationship with your child:
- Spend quality time with them every day
- Express interest in their activities
- Encourage them to express their feelings in healthy ways
- Respect their emotions
- Be their playmate
- Allow them to build relationships with their peers
Have Jesus-centric family discussions
You should talk about Jesus just like you talk about your family, friends, and neighbors, especially during meals or other times when your child is around.
Secondly, pray together as a family. You can do so during dinner time when all family members are present. Making Jesus a part of your family discussions will reinforce Him into your child’s memory.
Tell them Bible stories
Kids gravitate toward coloring books and attractive Disney characters. Introducing them to the Bible can be a challenge at first. But you can overcome this by getting a Bible designed for children. Or you can buy Bible storybooks for your children.
These books tell them stories about Christianity and Jesus. Start with stories that are easy to understand, such as the birth of Baby Jesus, Noah’s Ark, and the story of Creation.
Go to church regularly
The best way to introduce a child to Jesus is to model faith. Going to church is an excellent example that you love Jesus.
But you need to be consistent. Skipping church because you spent Sunday night on the lake or Saturday night partying with friends gives your child the impression that Jesus shouldn’t be their priority.
If you can, take your child to church, especially the adult service, where they can observe Christians worshipping together.
Practice forgiveness
Forgiveness is an important character trait to have as a Christian. Teach your child that merely reading the Bible isn’t enough; they also need to act on what the Bible preaches.
Forgiving your child whenever they make mistakes is an excellent way to do this. When you model forgiveness, your child follows suit.
Join a Christian community
One way to show your child that Jesus is important is through joining a Christian community. Becoming part of an active Christian community of devout Christians will strengthen your faith.
And when you grow spiritually, so does your child.
