Every day we commit many sins knowingly or unknowingly.
Our sins not only harm us but the entire Christian community as per the Catholic Church’s ideology. However, the Confession allows us to start again with stronger faith.
Many Christians have questions about the Confession that go unanswered. This blog will answer them for you.
Is it important for me to go to Confession?
We hurt ourselves and those around us whenever we sin. Christ gave us the sacrament of penance to reconcile when we sin. It helps us express our remorse in a meaningful way and acknowledge our sins. In addition, it grants us forgiveness from Christ and His Church and allows us to perform better in the future with a firm resolve.
What does the Confession involve?
The sacrament of penance consists of four parts: absolution, penance, confession, and contrition.
- Absolution: Using the virtue of the Cross, the Lord reconciles the sinner to Himself after the priest speaks the Word of God.
- Penance: In reparation of the sinner’s sins, the priest imposes the “penance,” which helps heal.
- Confession: Confession allows us to speak about our sins to the priest, thereby confessing them to the Lord.
- Contrition: This is the critical aspect of the penitent. Here we express sincere sorrow to God and ask for forgiveness, resolving not to repeat our sins.
What’s the purpose of confessing my sins to a priest?
Jesus said to St. Peter: “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.” (Matt 16:19).
This signifies that Jesus entrusted the authority of forgiveness to the Church. Hence, we bring our sins to the Church and the Holy Spirit because Jesus tied our forgiveness to them.
What if the priest repeats my Confession?
The priest cannot do this because they are obligated to keep our confessions confidential and secret. Moreover, they are entitled to automatic ex-communication as punishment if they violate the seal of confession.
How frequently should I Confess?
According to the Code of Canon, at least once per year. However, we recommend that you go to Confession monthly so you can purify your spirit often.
